Taiwan’s President Advocates for Fair Exchanges with China

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan President Lai Ching-te reiterated his call for equal, dignified, and healthy exchanges with China during a New Year’s Day press conference. While emphasizing Taiwan’s willingness for dialogue, Lai questioned Beijing’s intentions, citing restrictions that hinder even basic interactions like tourism.

Challenges in Taiwan-China Relations

Since taking office in May, President Lai has repeatedly extended offers for talks with China, only to be met with rejection. China views Taiwan as its territory and labels Lai a "separatist." However, Lai insists that the future of Taiwan should be determined solely by its people.

Restrictions on Tourism and Education

Lai highlighted the barriers China imposes on its citizens, such as restrictions on visiting Taiwan as tourists or studying on the island. These measures, he noted, contrast with the freedom Taiwanese citizens have to travel to China.

“Taiwan hopes to have healthy and orderly exchanges with China under the principles of reciprocity and dignity,” Lai emphasized.

Questioning Beijing’s Goodwill

The president challenged journalists to ask why Chinese citizens can freely visit countries like the United States and Japan but face stringent controls when it comes to Taiwan. “Is this really showing goodwill towards Taiwan? Can’t they treat everyone equally?” he asked.

Accusations on Both Sides

Taiwan and China have frequently exchanged accusations regarding travel restrictions. In June, Taiwan advised its citizens against traveling to China unless absolutely necessary, citing threats from Beijing to execute individuals deemed "diehard" Taiwan independence supporters.

A Path Forward

Despite these tensions, Lai remains hopeful for improved relations. He reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to fostering respectful and reciprocal exchanges, urging China to reconsider its approach and promote mutual understanding.

By advocating for fairness and dialogue, Taiwan’s leadership underscores its desire for peaceful and constructive relations with its neighbor.
